Tate Modern London

Intended as a separate gallery for international modern and contemporary art in London, the Tate Modern (see below) has hosted more than 40 million visitors since it opened in May 2000.

The site of the Tate Modern is the former Bankside Power Station which was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The power station included an impressive turbine hall, 35 metres high and 152 metres long, with a boiler house alongside and a single chimney.

The Tate Modern is one of the UK’s top three tourist attractions and provides around £100 million in economic benefits to London every year.

The Tate Modern showcases works of international modern and contemporary art dating from 1900 to the present. The permanent collection is displayed on levels three and five of the building, while level four hosts larger temporary exhibitions and a smaller space on level two houses work by contemporary artists.

Etihad Stadium & Sport City Manchester

The 48,000 capacity Etihad Stadium (formerly the City of Manchester Stadium), home ground of the 2011-2012 Premier League champions, Manchester City, is part of the Sportcity complex built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. There are plans to increase the capacity to around 61,000 to make the stadium the second largest Premier League ground after Old Trafford, home of rivals Manchester United.

Etihad Stadium & Sport City

Sportcity also includes the 6,500 seat Manchester Regional Arena, the National Squash Centre, the Manchester Velodrome, home for British Cycling, the Tennis Centre, a gymnasium and the English Institute of Sport, which altogether make up the largest sports complex in western Europe.

Etihad Stadium

Manchester City moved from their previous ground Maine Road in the Moss Side area of Manchester to the City of Manchester Stadium in 2003 and the arena was redesigned to accommodate the football club by removing the running track and installing entertainment facilities. The Etihad venue has stadium tours on offer and a football museum dedicated to the history of the club. Etihad Stadium hosted the 2008 UEFA Cup Final between Rangers and Zenit as well as international soccer and rugby games, boxing events and music concerts.
